What is Energy Challenge?

The aim of Energy Challenge is to create awareness and disseminate knowledge that will exemplify how support can be provided to companies in the metalforming sector that enables them to radically improve the effective use of energy within their business and improve the environmental performance of the sector whilst improving their own levels of competitiveness.

The aim will be achieved through the creation and dissemination of a series of modular based training and support materials that the companies can use in house to raise the awareness of the employees of the issues of energy management and the environment. This will be supported by the creation of a web based platform containing sector specific energy resource management materials which will also be replicated on a CD that will be made available to members of the sector.

The metalforming sector has a strong background in the implementation of manufacturing improvement techniques; however, there is still a limited appreciation of the business benefits associated with understanding and implementing strategies that reduce carbon emissions, including structured monitoring and analysis of energy usage, Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA), alternative energy sources and carbon trading. This project aims to increase the capacity of the workforce in the Sector, enabling the companies to improve their business performance in an environmentally sustainable way and to reduce their impact on the environmental footprint of the economy. With ever increasing environmental and economic demands being placed on companies in the sector, e.g. Climate Change Levy, IPPC and increasing landfill taxes, it is no longer enough to concentrate on manufacturing improvements without giving due consideration to the longer term environmental impacts of the processes being used.

Organisations that include a large proportion of low skilled individuals require simple processes and methods to create an effective and sustainable platform for the implementation of improvements within the workplace. Key delivery mechanisms will help overcome the needs of this group, through the creation of innovative methods including work-based learning, peer support and on-line materials.

One of the key challenges in a mature market that is highly cost conscious is to raise awareness and encourage participation in a way that is highly cost effective to the participating companies. Many companies find it hard to release people for off site events; therefore this project will focus on the identification of companies who will benefit most from improving their awareness of energy resource management and the provision of practical advice within the workplace.
